The Williams Family is the fifth episode of series 3, and the 20th episode overall, of the British Supernanny series. It was later remade and re-released as the sixteenth episode of season 5 of the American Supernanny show.

Sypnopsis[]

"Supernanny heads to Birmingham where four feisty children, and their dad, are driving mum mad! 6-year old Tyler is aggressive towards his mother, swears, and lashes out at his sisters. The 4-year-old baby of the family, Tia, kicks, scratches and throws tantrums if she doesn’t get her own way. Sisters Bethany and Lori try to tow the line but it’s hard to behave in such a hectic home. Getting all four kids washed, dressed and out of the house is a daily ordeal and bedtimes are a disaster. Meanwhile, Dad just buries himself in his hobbies. Can Supernanny tame the children and motivate dad?" - supernanny.co.uk

Allegations of Failure[]

A few days after the episode was filmed, the Williams became a happy family thanks to Jo's help. However, in a few years times, it was discovered that Tyler had been verbally bullying someone in his secondary school in such a "horrific" way that left his victim traumatized. Fans speculated that this development was due to Tyler still having his extremely high aggression because the producers actually instigated his behaviour (similar to what they allegedly did with The Young Family (U.K.)), or that he could not let go of his time on Supernanny. It was also discovered that Natalie went back to her old ways and that the family failed to follow through with Jo's techniques once the episode finished production. However, Tyler has since settled down, returned to school, and held a job after the incident. Beth has admitted that she felt that Jo's techniques had no impact, neither positive or negative. As such, Jo did not fail to help the family: she was able to provide the foundations for improving, and they were able to expound on that with professional help.

Version Differences[]

  • In the US version of this episode, the reward chart scenes are deleted.
  • All swearing is censored during Tyler's tantrums because of the TV-PG rating of the show.

Pop Culture[]

  • The family own a Nintendo GameCube, which can be seen in several scenes. In addition, in the scene where Tyler misuses his Naughty Chair, a pair of Donkey Konga bongos can be seen.

Trivia[]

  • Tia is tied with Rhys from The Howat Family for the most amount of times returned to timeout in Supernanny history, with each being returned 100 times.
  • Jo has the same appearance in the interview scenes from the episode's American dub as she did in The Gormley-Brickley Family. It is likely that both episodes were remade on the same day.
  • Tyler is considered to be one of the worst kids in the series due to his high aggression in the episode. His aggression has been compared to that of Devin from The Nitti Family, while him becoming a bully has been compared to Max from The Swift Family.
    • Some people believe that he also has ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder).
  • Martin is often considered to be one of the worst parents in the UK series, as he was often on the computer instead of taking care of the kids, and disagreeing with Natalie often. In fact, many consider him to be, jokingly, Natalie's 5th child. In Beyond The Naughty Step, he was also hated due to his verbally abusive behavior at IKEA to both the kids and the worker. In addition, he could have also been charged with reckless driving: the table that he purchased there was placed over their heads when the family entered the car, making it difficult for Martin to drive.
  • This is the only time in Supernanny where a timeout technique was changed to another one (not counting Sophie's in The Steer Family). In this case, Tyler first used the Naughty Chair, but when he started misusing the chair and threw it across the room, Jo told Natalie to take the chair away, and it was replaced with the Naughty Corner.
    • It is also the only time where Jo let a child apologize before their Timeout was over.

Behind the Scenes[]

This was filmed in July 2006, during the 2006 FIFA World Cup tournament.
