The Keilen Family is the eighth episode of Season 2 of the American Supernanny show.

Episode summary[]

Jo meets the Keilen family in New Market, Minnesota. With Shaun (27) and Tami (27) who have 4 children. Haeley (6), twins Maile and Malia (4) and Leighton (1).

Shaun is a firefighter paramedic who formerly was in the navy, works 24 hour shifts and would rather spend time with his family.

A working mother with a craving for perfection, Tami places more importance on making sure the girls are dressed perfectly than she does on making sure they behave. In spare moments, instead of spending time with her hard-working husband, she spends time cleaning the house and making sure all the vacuum tracks are back in place on the carpet (although this work can last until 2 a.m.). Tami’s perfection behavior has all three her daughters acting out because she focused more on the looks on the children and the house instead of correcting their behavior

Maile is very bright, opinionated and strong willed. However her sisters especially her parents think she likes to give them a hard time whenever she argues with them or throw fits. In reality her parents allow her to have full rein and rule the roost despite her being four years old. The biggest challenge is getting Maile dressed. If she is not happy with the outfit she’s told to wear, she will take it right off. With Tami’s demands of perfection and Maile’s strong will, it takes two hours to get Tami to win the battle.

The other girls also misbehave. In Malia’s perfect world she would be on her mom’s lap 24/7. Although calmer than her twin sister, she also can get argumentative at times and get into fights with her sisters.

Haeley gets very frustrated and impatient constantly with both of the twins. She gets constant headaches from Maile's screaming and she gets upset when both of the twins annoy her or when they don’t understand something. As a result she can be very bossy and rude to them. Sometimes she could lash out and get physical and aggressive with them.

All three of the girls misbehave in the car and out in public — especially in the grocery store. In the car, the girls act really rowdy and very rambunctious; they fight and constantly take their seat belts off. At the grocery store, the kids stand on the cart, run around, and throw fits.

Meanwhile, Leighton is in his high chair all by himself with no attention from his parents, and is lost in the shuffle as a result.

Can Jo help the Keilens gain control over their household?

Behind the Scenes[]

This episode was filmed in September-October 2005.

Trivia[]

  • This episode was criticised due to Tami being too much of a perfectionist. The most notable example is making sure to give all three girls white sweaters, and having one of them itch Maile.
    • People also criticised her for her hypocrisy; Tami stated that she wanted everything to be perfect, but had forgotten to bring Leighton upstairs when she was getting the girls ready for the morning. She's also known for giving Haeley a timeout, all for teaching her sisters how to play a board game.
  • Maile is tied with Tina from The Weinstein Family for the 5th longest tantrum in Supernanny history, with their tantrums lasting for both 2 hours. Isabella from The Bruno Family & Brandon from The Kerns Family have the 4th longest at 2½ hours, Madeline from The Bowersock Family has the 3rd longest, with 3 hours, Zoe from The Benjany Family holds the 2nd longest, and the longest in the U.S series, with her's lasting 3½ hours, and Cameron from The Smith-Clarke Family holds the single longest tantrum, with it lasting 4½ hours.
  • Despite Malia being on Tami's lap a lot, Jo somehow did not implemented the Off-The-Hip Technique.
    • This was also the same problem with The Harmony Family and The Atkinson Family, as they also had a child (Grant and Reese respectively) overly-attached to their parent. Because Reese had Separation Anxiety, Jo had to use a different technique on her, whereas Grant was dealt with, using the Seperation technique, rather than Off-The-Hip.
  • The Cantoni Family was going to air after this episode. However it was delayed to Season 3.
  • People have also criticized Haeley for not riding in a booster seat since you have to be 8 years old to get out of a booster seat as of she was 6 years old which is too young. People also criticized Leighton for riding in a rear-facing car seat instead of a forward-facing seat because 1 year olds outgrow their first car seat.
  • Shaun is the first person, who was known to have watched Supernanny prior to the episode he was featured in. The second was Danielle from The Colombo Family.
  • This and The Tsironis Family are the only episodes to take place in Minnesota.
  • Keilen is German for Rope in.

Events Post-Episode[]

  • Tami and Shaun had a 5th child, another son giving Leighton a brother
  • Tami and Shaun divorced.

Pop Culture[]

  • When we see Leighton for the first time, he can be seen wearing a sweater based off the Disney Movie, "101 Dalmatians".
  • The game, that the girls and Tami were playing in the test run, was Operation, which had to be blurred out.
  • In The Observation When Maile asked Tami for lunch Maile can be seen holding A Kid Cruisine but it was blurred out due to avoid copyright issues.
